Three Dog Night was very cold

My music is what I like and HawaiiBlogger likes rock ‘n roll. Creedence. Stones. Three Dog Night. Rock the stage, baby. Rock it.

Well, to be honest, I used to like rock ‘n roll. These days I’m having second thoughts.

Creedence Clearwater Revival retired at the top. That’s classy. The Stones are still going but look like they died a few decades ago. That’s tacky.

Three Dog Night came to Honolulu’s Neil Blaisdell Concert Hall (a few decades after their last visit to Hawaii) and performed with the Honolulu Symphony Pops Orchestra. The Orchestra didn’t sing. Three Dog Night didn’t need to. And shouldn’t have. Seriously, what’s wrong with lip syncing?

This is the group that ruled the pop charts from 1969 to 1975 with such chart-topping hits as One, Eli’s Coming, Mama Told Me Not To Come, Black and White, Joy To The World. The remnants of Three Dog Night played each of their hits but didn’t sing. Screech, maybe. Howl, perhaps. Shout? Yes. Sing? No.

Whatever vocal form Three Dog Night had in the 1970s, played in the 1970s, and stayed in the 1970s. Technical glitches were the order of the opening night. A keyboard that couldn’t be heard. Drums that could only be felt. The vocals brought tears to my eyes. Did I shed tears brought by rekindled memories? Yes. I remember what Three Dog Night was all about and they’re not about music anymore, hence the tears.

In a word, it was an awful night. Yes, that’s more than a word, but more words are necessary to describe how much money was wasted per minute in a vain attempt to revive an era of glory.

My first mistake was believing that the past could be captured and brought, intact, to the present. That cost me $87 for two tickets, about $1.00 a minute. My second mistake was not investing more money in alcoholic beverages before Three Dog Night hit the stage. Alcohol stirs the spirit and dulls the senses, the latter of which was a requirement to enjoy the show.

My bad.
