KHNL-TV’s John Fink thinks there’s a void in the news from morning to night. The TV station plans to fill the void in December with an 11:00 AM newscast starring pretty face news reader Kristine Uyeno.
Kudos to Fink for not hiring Jai Cunningham to shout the news at 11:00. Still, the question is, “why is the local NBC affiliate adding another 30-minute local newscast?”
In a word, money. It’s all about money. It’s not about filling a void of local news during the day. It’s about filling a void of advertising revenue by using resources that are already available. Adding a newscast is low cost relative to the potential revenue increase.
About that so-called void of news during the day– many consider it a respite from local television news regurgitations. Who’s watching local TV from 5:00 AM to 7:00 AM? Who will watch more news at 11:00 AM?
News is news and we get it from more sources than ever, more often than ever. Radio, television, internet, cable television, cubicle mates, email alerts, cell phones. How much of the same thing can we stand?
As much as advertisers are willing to buy.
News production costs are being amortized over more revenue opportunities these days. The newspapers have web sites and collect more revenue. The perfect example of news recycling is on television. Joe Moore reads the news, local and world, at KHON.
I’m certain they just record Joe at 6:00 PM and play him back at 10:00 PM.
