Who is the big winner this year? ESPN? Hawaii football fans? The University of Hawaii? The Warriors? Colt Brennan?
The big winner is Warriors head coach June Jones, whose contract expires soon. Could an undefeated season, a Heisman candidate and star quarterback, a Top 10 ranking, and a profitable BCS bowl appearance come at a worse or better time?
The timing is better for June Jones and worse for the University of Hawaii and Warrior supporters who may have to ante up more money– much more– to keep the popular head coach in Hawaii. Jones reportedly makes about $800,000 a year; roughly half from the University, half from supporter donations.
With the national football spotlight shining brightly on the islands, Hawaii has become flush with the taste of fame and glory. The sobering question is, what price fame and glory?
The University of Hawaii will receive millions of dollars for the football team’s appearance in the Sugar Bowl. Colt Brennan will receive millions following the NFL draft. What of the architect of Hawaii’s inebriation of fame and glory? What’s his price tag to continue the era of fame and glory?
