Long live Klum Gym

The University of Hawaii is 100 years old. May the memories of Klum Gym last another 100 years. Or not.

One of my earlier memories of Hawaii was the first visit to Klum Gym at the UH Manoa campus to register for fall classes.

Tables, teachers, lines, oh my!

3×5 index cards, humidity, and sweat, oh my!

Before landing at the UH Termite Palace, I attended a mainland college which handled class registration by computer. The whole process of registering for a semester of classes took about 20 minutes, 10 of which were waiting in line. Indoors. In air conditioned comfort.

Not so, Klum Gym. The whole registration process back in those days was manual. The line waiting process was outside. In the rain, the sun, and the resulting humidity. Once inside, the human cock roaches as students scurried from one desk to another to obtain the coveted index card and registration for a particular class.

Long live Klum Gym. The cock roaches may be gone, but the memories live on.
