One of the arguments against the ill-fated Hawaii SuperFerry is the danger posed by invasive species. The ferry could spread biological or marine or other contaminants between the islands.
Maybe. Maybe not.
Ships have been sailing to and from and between the islands for a few centuries. If there were invasive species would they not have reared their bacterially infected faces by now?
According to Jim Puckett, there is even more danger floating around on the high seas in the form of the SS Oceanic (not to be confused with Time-Warner ‘Oceanic’, which is a different infestation). Reports say the SS Oceanic now carries hundreds of tons of contaminated materials in the form of toxic PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyl) and asbestos, and is looking for a place to refuel, dock, or a buyer of toxic poisons. Or worse.
The SS Oceanic is considered a “floating time bomb” and authorities fear it may be headed to the beaches of Bangladesh, or perhaps Pakistan or India, where they often care more about invasive religions and care less about invasive toxins.
Somehow the argument against invasive species doesn’t looks so ridiculous, does it?
