The peak of the University of Hawaii’s sports programs came with the football Warriors undefeated 2007 season. That was it, folks. The good years are gone.
Actually, the University of Hawaii’s modest prominence for producing excellent sports teams has been lingering a slow death for a decade or more. June Jones’ Warriors kept it going for a few years longer than other sports.
What about UH baseball? The hardballers with metal bats haven’t had national prominence since the Les Murakami days. What about UH basketball? Puhleeze. Alika Smith and A.C. Carter made up the last really good men’s basketball team.
What about the UH girl’s volleyball teams? Despite some great teams and players over the past 20 years, it’s been awhile since the Wahine won much of anything other than a WAC title. What about the UH men’s volleyball teams? Sorry, folks. It’s also been awhile since the once dominant Warriors made it to the Top 10, let alone won a must-win game. The dwindling crowds at the Stan Sheriff Center are evidence of glory days gone by.
What happened? UH volleyball once reigned supreme, men and women. UH baseball had an annual lock on the Top 25. UH football, once proud fighters for mediocrity in the WAC rose to glory under June Jones.
What happened. June Jones knows.
