The Sand On The Beach In Waikiki

If you haven’t been to Waikiki recently, you’re in for a surprise. Take a drive down Kalakaua to see all the sand along the beach. It’s not just a few mounds of sand. It’s a few mountains of sand.

The beach in Waikiki is getting a facelift.

Parked offshore is a dredging boat which is pumping sand onto the beach. This is not your father’s beach remodeling. This is some serious sand.

Why? The beaches along Waikiki suffer from erosion and need the sand to be replenished every few years. Erosion has been so bad in recent years that a few truckloads of new sand won’t do the job.

Tourists love Waikiki, but they don’t know that the beaches there are of moderate quality compared to others elsewhere in the islands.

Right now, the beaches are in sad shape, full of sand mountains and heavy equipment. When the beach remodeling is done, sections will look much different than Waikiki beach of yesteryear.
